In their 28 head-to-head encounters, the Challengers lead by 17 wins to 10 (with one no result). The Challengers currently have six points while the Capitals have four. Who will take the important two points from this match? Keep reading to find out our IPL prediction of who will win this match!

Delhi Capitals Team Preview

The Delhi Capitals got off to a good start this season when they beat five-time champions Mumbai Indians in their opening fixture. However, they were then defeated by the Gujarat Titans and the Lucknow Super Giants. The Capitals shrugged off these reversals and returned to winning ways by out-batting the Kolkata Knight Riders by 44 runs in Match 19, posting a high challenging score of 215. This was their fourth highest IPL score, and the second highest score in the competition this season.

The addition of David Warner in the Capitals camp after a nine year absence is starting to pay off. A blazing opening stand from Warner (61 from 45 balls for a 135.56 strike rate) and Prithvi Shaw (51 from 29 balls for a strike rate of 175.86) saw them add 93 runs in just 8.4 overs which helped lay the foundation. Shaw is currently the tenth highest run scorer in the IPL 2022 having scored 160 runs in four innings to give him a strike rate of 170.21.

Warner and Rishabh Pant powered the Capitals to 125 for 1 after 11 overs. Pant was characteristically valiant in his 27 runs off 14 balls, with his reverse sweeps. The pair added 55 runs in just 25 balls. Axar Patel and Shardul Thakur’s partnership of 49 runs in 26 balls in the final overs maintained the batting momentum.

Kuldeep Yadav’s left-arm wrist-spin bowling (4/35 in 4 overs) and left-arm pacer Khaleel Ahmed (3/25 in 4 overs) stalled the Knight Riders run chase.

South African pace bowler Anrich Nortje, making his first start for the Capitals against the Lucknow Super Giants due to injury, had a game to forget in March 15. He was removed from the attack for bowling two beamers and was therefore left out of the match against the Knight Riders. It will be interesting to see if he remains absent as Ahmed provided very effective cover (3/25) including two of the top order. If he does, then the bowling attack will remain unchanged with Axar Patel, Yadav, and Mustafizur Rahman finishing 4 for 35 including a three-wicket over. Rahman is consistently an economical bowler with an economy of 5.75, 6.50, and 5.75 in his last three games, and could be a good option if you are IPL betting on this match.

The Capitals may look to bring in the in-from Under 19 Indian start batsman Yash Dhull who has double centuries to his name this year in the Ranji Trophy, perhaps at the expense of Mandeep Singh.

Royal Challengers Bangalore Team Preview

Skippered by South African Faf du Plessis, last seasons runner-up the Royal Challengers Bangalore, have made a successful start to the season winning three out of five games. The Challengers lost their first game against the Punjab Kings but managed to post 205 for 2 and have since achieved successful run chases of 128, 169, and 152 against the Kolkata Knight Riders, the Rajasthan Royals, and the Mumbai Indians. They came into their last game against the Chennai Super Kings in good form but came off second best, losing by 23 runs in a high scoring game giving the Super Kings their first win.

The Challengers had no opportunities to thwart the huge 183 scored by Shivam Dube and Robin Uthappa, reaching a massive 216/4 which is the highest score in the competition to date. The Challengers run chase didn’t start well, and they lost an early wicket of skipper Du Plessis then Anuj Rawat and Virat Kohli inside the Powerplay for 21 runs between them. Glen Maxwell scored a quick-fire 26 off 11 deliveries. The middle order did help to rebuild the innings with Shahbaz Ahmed (41), Suyash Prabhudessai (34), and Dinesh Karthik (34) all making quick runs; however it was never going to be enough. In the end, a total of 193 was a decent attempt. If we consider candidates for online cricket betting, Karthik is proving that he is a consistent batter.

If the top order batters can weigh in with a decent score, and with similar support from the middle order, we could see a decent total posted by the Challengers against the Capitals.

Toss Prediction

We are fairly confident with our toss prediction and that’s because so far, we’ve only seen one decision from every captain so far in the tournament. Every single captain has invited their opponents to bat first. This means in the evening, if any dew is settling, their opponents will be more effected by it when bowling. Additionally, the dew can help the batting department slightly, so it’s a better position to be in bowling first and batting second in these T20 matches.

Pitch Conditions

Match 27 is taking place at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai. We can expect dry conditions for cricket, with temperatures in the high 20s (C) and fairly high humidity around 77%. The evening start and high humidity will mean the impact of dew on the outfield in the second innings will likely be a significant factor and can potentially impact the outcome of the match.

The average first innings this season at Wankhede is 152.0, with the average first innings winning score slightly higher at 165.0. Only 20% of the matches have been won by the team batting first, which really goes to show how important the coin toss actually is. The spin and pace bowling average is quite comparable with 29.3 for the former and 28.0 for the latter.

Our Match Prediction

The Capitals are looking to push on from their inconsistent form and make two back to back wins. Their batting and bowling departs are working well and contributing easily. Will Nortje play? If he does, will he perform better than his replacement Ahmed who played very well against the Knight Riders? It is certainly a gamble, but is it enough to change our match prediction today?

As for the Challengers, if the top order batters can weigh in with a decent score between then, and with continued good support from the middle order, we could see a decent challenging total posted by them. This match will certainly be a close one and it’s reflected at the top IPL betting sites. However, in our opinion for the match today, it’s the Challengers that we predict will win.
